Tall case brass dial clock, 1745-1755.

Japanned white pine tall-case clock. The hood has a molded sarcophagus top with three gilded urn-and-flame finials, central finial on a molded plinth, flanking finals on block plinths, a molded arch above the door, blind fretwork above the door, sidelights with astragal tops, free-standing turned columns at the front corners, turned quarter columns at the back corners, and a glazed door with an astragal top. Waist with cove molding at the top and a case door with a molded edge and an astragal top. Base with ogee molding at the top, a stepped and molded bottom, a skirt with a round pendant drop, all supported on bracket feet. The case is japanned, featuring images of flowers, animals, figures, trees, boats, and architectural elements molded in gesso and gilt at the front. The background is red and black paint blended to resemble tortoiseshell. Composite brass dial with applied chapter ring with roman hour numerals and arabic minute numerals, applied cast ornament in the spandrels, and a rocking ship in the lunette. Inside the chapter ring there is an applied seconds dial and a calendar aperture. The chapter ring is engraved "Brown Boston" at the bottom. Eight day movement.
